However, that\u2019s not a very good definition because it makes synthesizing too similar to summarizing. While the ideas may seem similar, synthesizing actually <a href=\"https:\/\/writingcenter.ashford.edu\/synthesis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">takes summarizing a step further<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Synthesis involves taking information from various sources and drawing links between them. Summarizing and paraphrasing the information is the first step, but you need to be able to see\u2014and explain\u2014what unifies it.<\/p>\n<p>It takes a lot of skill to synthesize. It draws on the following skills:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reading comprehension<\/li>\n<li>Organization<\/li>\n<li>Analysis<\/li>\n<li>The ability to communicate your ideas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because of all that\u2019s involved, it can take some time and practice for it to feel natural. And even if you\u2019re not specifically writing a synthesis essay, that doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t, or shouldn\u2019t, use your synthesis skills.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get into some examples.<\/p>\n<p>Say you\u2019re writing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-examples\/an-analysis-of-the-symbolism-of-the-skull-in-hamlet-kGyCvKeQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">essay analyzing the symbolism of Yorrick\u2019s skull in <i>Hamlet<\/i><\/a>. You can draw on your personal knowledge of the material and of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/identify-write-about-literary-symbols\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">symbolism in general<\/a> to conclude that the skull is a symbol of death.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you read other critiques of <i>Hamlet <\/i>(and there are countless critiques out there), you may find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/heres-how-to-kill-it-on-your-hamlet-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other meanings<\/a>, such as Hamlet\u2019s destiny, or that no matter how useful, kind, funny, or charismatic a person may be in life, death and decay make the dead person useless.<\/p>\n<p>Once you see common threads in multiple sources, your mind starts piecing the information together, and you can form your own opinion. Show me examples.<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<h3>Synthesizing information in humanities\/social sciences papers<\/h3>\n<p>The social sciences\u2014such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/13-history-essay-topics-will-bring-essay-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">history<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-examples\/anthropology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">anthropology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/sociology-research-topics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sociology<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-examples\/philosophy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">philosophy<\/a>\u2014rely heavily on synthesis. There are a lot of arguments in these fields, so you have a lot of evidence to draw upon no matter what your opinion.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I once wrote an essay about Louis Armstrong and whether he used his music as a subversive force to shake up the status quo and get black musicians (and black people in general) the respect they deserve. There were many historians who believed he was \u201cplaying the minstrel\u201d and acting on stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>However, others believed that, while he played up some stereotypes to get white audiences to let their guard down, his lyrics and personal philosophies were subversive.<\/p>\n<p>I had personal biases going into the essay because Louis is one of my favorite musicians. But I kept an open mind and read many <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.ithaca.edu\/research101\/primary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">secondary sources<\/a> on the subject. I then found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-find-primary-sources-for-your-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">primary sources<\/a> of his music, as well as interviews and voice recordings from his personal life. I sorted through the information to pick out themes and commonalities.&nbsp;My opinion was formed because of the evidence, not because of my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/why-avoiding-bias-in-writing-is-so-important-and-how-to-do-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bias<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once I had the information organized, I could use the evidence I found from some of the sources to make my case.<\/p>\n<p>When you do this on your own, you may feel the urge to just write down all the information you found. But that is <i>not <\/i>synthesis. Instead, explain your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/the-argumentative-essay-everything\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">argument<\/a>, and use the most compelling evidence you found to support it.<\/p>\n<p>You should also consider referencing sources you don\u2019t agree with. Perhaps you could say something like, \u201cWhile Smith argued x, this other evidence suggests y.\u201d This method shows that you truly understand the point you\u2019re arguing and that you\u2019ve considered all angles.<\/p>\n<p>Writing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/what-is-a-literature-review-and-how-do-you-write-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">literature review<\/a> (in any subject)? But let\u2019s look at a couple different professions anyway.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve worked as a digital marketing analyst, which was almost always synthesizing information. I looked at raw data to analyze trends. But simply finding the trends wasn\u2019t enough. I also had to draw on information from other accounts and on industry knowledge of how digital marketing worked.<\/p>\n<p>After synthesizing the data, other account information, and industry expertise, I was able to make changes and recommendations to help my clients perform their best.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you take a completely different route and choose not to work in an office setting. If you were a restaurant owner, you\u2019d still have to know how to synthesize information.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, if you wanted to add a dish to your menu, you\u2019d first have to know what people in your area like to eat. But you&#8217;d also need to know about trends in the restaurant industry, the cost\/availability of ingredients, the amount of time it would take to make the dish, and your employees\u2019 specific talents.<\/p>\n<p>You wouldn\u2019t come up with the new menu item before you had all of this information. Instead, you might have a general idea of a dish, but you would synthesize this information, balancing the price of ingredients with the demand from your customers, and knowing whether your staff had the time, knowledge, and resources to make it.<\/p>\n<h3>Synthesizing information in your personal life<\/h3>\n<p>Knowing how to synthesize information is actually something most people do without thinking about it. We do it all the time in our personal lives.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re planning a vacation but don\u2019t know where to go, you\u2019d ask family and friends for ideas, look at information about different destinations, check out airfare and lodging options, etc. Then you\u2019d use those synthesis muscles to pick out the perfect spot for your interests and budget.<\/p>\n<h2>Weaving It All Together<\/h2>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10120 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/weave.jpg\" alt=\"hands weaving blue thread in round loom\" width=\"500\" height=\"286\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10120 size-full lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20500%20286%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"hands weaving blue thread in round loom\" width=\"500\" height=\"286\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/weave.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the synthesis skills you learn in school can help you in virtually any aspect of life. While there&#8217;s no fool-proof way to synthesize every situation, here are the basic steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Pull your resources. <\/b>Think back to the primary and secondary sources mentioned earlier. Make sure sources are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/apply-craap-test-essay-sources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">credible and relevant<\/a> to the topic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Read, watch, and\/or listen to the information you find. <\/b>It helps to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/10-note-taking-strategies-to-write-a-better-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">highlight or take notes<\/a>, so you can find the important parts later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Organize information into groups of similar ideas. <\/b>I find using color-coding systems works best. But you may find lists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/graphic-organizers-for-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">graphic organizers<\/a>, or other organizational methods to be the thing for you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Analyze information based on the evidence.<\/strong> Not all information is going to say the same thing. Which articles make the most sense based on what you know? Which speakers make the most compelling arguments?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Form an opinion based on your analysis.<\/strong> Where does the evidence point? Are there any biases that may be altering your opinion? If so, try to filter those out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>State your opinion, and back it up with the evidence.<\/strong> An opinion without evidence is fine in some situations, but if you\u2019re trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/persuasive-techniques-more-convincing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">persuade someone<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/50-argumentative-essay-topics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">argue a point<\/a>, you better be able to back up what you\u2019re saying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Learning how to synthesize information can help you write better essays.
