(In some cases, you may even use the wrong word but <i>think<\/i> you\u2019re using it correctly.)<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe couple practices <i>monotony.\u201d <\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this case, the correct word should be <i>monogamy<\/i> (not monotony).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Take note:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The resulting malapropism <i>can <\/i>lead to an unintended humorous outcome. In the example above, the joke is that two people who have been together for a very long time as a couple may, in fact, say they have a lot of monotony in their lives.<\/p>\n<h3>Intentional malapropisms<\/h3>\n<p>Malapropisms are also used intentionally to add humor or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-write-satirical-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">satire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, <em>malapropisms<\/em> as a term first emerged in 1775 thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-examples\/the-rivals-and-epic-theatre-how-verfremdungseffekt-creates-satire-of-sentimentalism-9ufE57p3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the character Mrs. Malaprop<\/a> in Richard Brinsley Sheridan\u2019s play <em>The Rivals. <\/em>The play is a comedy of manners (meaning it satirizes the behaviors of those in a certain social group, usually the upper class).<\/p>\n<p>In more modern times, the character <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archie_Bunker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Archie Bunker<\/a>, from the 1970s sitcom <i>All in the Family, <\/i>was the master of malapropisms. (While the <i>character <\/i>of Archie Bunker was guilty of mixing up a great many words, the writers knew <i>exactly <\/i>what they were doing when they wrote these humorous lines.)<\/p>\n<p><b>Here are two of Archie Bunker\u2019s more famous malapropisms:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cPatience is a virgin\u201d instead of \u201cpatience is a virtue\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIn closing, I\u2019d like to say Molotov!\u201d instead of \u201cin closing, I\u2019d like to say Mazel Tov!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Interested in more examples? Interns are often students and generally work without pay.<\/p>\n<p><b>In turn <\/b>means in succession or one after the other.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Malapropism<\/b>: The company\u2019s decision to reduce costs has <i>intern <\/i>caused more than 50 people to lose their jobs.<\/li>\n<li><b>Correct usage:<\/b> The company\u2019s decision to reduce costs has <i>in turn<\/i> caused more than 50 people to lose their jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cIntern\u201d and \u201cin turn\u201d sound virtually the same in speech, so if you misuse the word in a conversation, no one will likely notice. On paper, though, the difference is clear, and you\u2019ll most certainly be busted for using this malapropism.<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cA rolling stone gathers no moths\u201d instead of \u201ca rolling stone gathers no moss\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>While it\u2019s true that a stone that is literally rolling wouldn\u2019t be a place for moths to rest, the correct word in the idiom is \u201cmoss,\u201d not \u201cmoths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The idiom refers to the idea that people in constant motion don\u2019t have time to become stagnant.<\/p>\n<p>It can also mean that people who do not settle down (and thus move from one place to the next) don\u2019t need to worry about responsibility or obligations. Edit my essay.<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<h3>Four examples of malapropisms spoken by famous people<\/h3>\n<h4>\u201cOranges\u201d instead of \u201corigins\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>Though it doesn\u2019t seem likely that someone would confuse the two, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/video\/2019\/apr\/03\/trump-asks-journalists-to-look-into-the-oranges-of-the-mueller-investigation-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here\u2019s a clip of President Trump<\/a> appearing to state \u201cthe oranges of the investigation\u201d rather than \u201cthe origins of the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cElectrical\u201d instead of \u201celectoral\u201d<\/h4>\n<p><b>Electrical, <\/b>of course, has to do with electricity.<\/p>\n<p><b>Electoral <\/b>relates to elections (as in the electoral college).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yogi Berra once famously stated, \u201cTexas has a lot of electrical votes.&#8221; (He should have said \u201cTexas has a lot of electoral votes.\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>\u201cMass production\u201d instead of \u201cmass destruction\u201d<\/h4>\n<p><b>Mass production<\/b> means you\u2019re creating.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mass destruction<\/b> means you\u2019re destroying.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Former President George H. W.
