Unfortunately, this often leads to a paper littered with wordy sentences. Instead of adding more context or evidence to your thesis, you end up with a lot of fluff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the most important thing in your mind is meeting that word count, being too wordy can make your argument less impactful. Trust me\u2014I know. I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve noticed, but I write some pretty long sentences. Does that make them wordy? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not necessarily. In fact, long sentences are important\u2014as long as you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/improve-sentence-variety-essays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vary the length<\/a> of your sentences. If you wrote a whole essay using nothing but short sentences, it would sound choppy. See this paragraph revamped as short sentences, for example:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2902\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/red-x-e1419626342132.png\" alt=\"red letter X\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2902 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%2020%2020%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"red letter X\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/red-x-e1419626342132.png\">Not necessarily. Long sentences are important. But vary the length. Don\u2019t use only short sentences. It sounds choppy.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original version was much better because it flowed better from one sentence to the next.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other side of the spectrum, you can have short <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wordy sentences. The second gets the same message across without losing any meaning or context. Many teachers, writers, and readers would say it even sounds stronger than the first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what is wordiness? What\u2019s the big deal?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s true that you probably won\u2019t fail your paper just because you have some wordiness. But it can detract from the impact of your essay. And if there\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too much<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wordiness, it makes it hard for your readers to find the important information you\u2019ve worked so hard to include.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concise language also makes you sound more confident as a writer. It cut out the weasel words and the mention of the writer, leaving only what\u2019s important. The intent is clear. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what you want in your own writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Avoid Wordy Sentences<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s one thing to understand why you should avoid wordiness, but you also need to know how. Don\u2019t worry\u2014I have you covered there too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Take yourself out of the equation<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I\u2019m referring to here are those \u201cI believe,\u201d \u201cI think,\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m going to show\u201d statements. However, students and writers sometimes overuse adjectives and adverbs when they could have instead chosen a stronger noun or verb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a look at the following examples. You probably won\u2019t have these specific phrases in your essay, but it gives you a good idea of how you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/ultimate-guide-perfect-word-choice-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">use stronger words<\/a> to reduce wordiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walked leisurely \u2192 sauntered<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very tall man \u2192 giant<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shook violently \u2192 convulsed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stronger nouns and verbs aren\u2019t always going to be at the tip of your tongue, so don\u2019t be afraid to use a thesaurus. Just be careful not to overuse it. They just seem to weasel their way into sentences without writers noticing. They\u2019re not always easy to spot because we tend to use them when we speak. Other examples include \u201cthen,\u201d \u201call at once,\u201d etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Importantly, weasel words shouldn\u2019t be confused with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/good-transition-words-can-improve-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transitions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sometimes you need words like \u201chowever,\u201d \u201ctherefore,\u201d \u201cadditionally,\u201d and others to make your thoughts flow logically from one sentence to the next. That way, I can edit with fresh eyes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first edit is focused on big organizational changes. Are the paragraphs in the right order? Are there whole sentences or paragraphs you can eliminate altogether? You might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/reverse-outline-use-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">try a reverse outline<\/a> at this stage to help get things in order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the organization is good, then comes the smaller, word-level edits. Hit Ctrl+F on your keyboard, and search for the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Really<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adverbs ending in -ly<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any weasel words you know you use too much<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the words are necessary, leave them in. But if you can delete them or change them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/why-eliminating-wordiness-is-so-important-for-your-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cut down on wordiness<\/a>, do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, do one last round of edits to catch any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/common-grammar-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other errors<\/a> and to make sure everything still flows after the changes you\u2019ve made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I understand if you don\u2019t have time to wait a day and do three rounds of edits after that.
