You\u2019re still reading this post, so not only did the line serve as an attention grabber, but it compelled you to continue reading because you want to learn how to get a better grade.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the entire purpose of an attention grabber: to get readers to take notice and become interested in what you have to say.<\/p>\n

How do you write an attention grabber that works for your <\/i>paper? Here are a few tips for writing an opening line that deserves to be noticed.<\/p>\n

But First… What Not <\/i>to Do<\/h2>\n

Before we get into a discussion of how to write attention grabbers, let\u2019s stop for a minute to talk about two things you shouldn\u2019t <\/i>do.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t write in first person (unless you\u2019re writing a narrative or reflective<\/a> essay). <\/b>Most academic essays frown on using first person point of view<\/a>, so don\u2019t try to make your statement by including a story about yourself or your opinion.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t write in second person. <\/b>It can be tempting to try to engage your audience<\/a> by writing a second-person attention grabber that starts with something like \u201cImagine yourself sitting on the beach\u2026\u201d or \u201cWhat would you do if\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n

Avoid these tired, boring openings. They\u2019re not only cliche, but they also infuriate profs. (Second-person point of view is also pretty much universally forbidden in formal essays<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

How to Write Attention Grabbers That Work<\/h2>\n

When it comes to attention grabbers, one size definitely does not fit all.<\/p>\n

What might be a brilliant opening for a description essay will likely be inappropriate for a research paper<\/a>. (Some attention grabbers, however, can <\/i>be revised<\/a> into great openings for different types of papers.)<\/p>\n

With that in mind, I\u2019ve included a few types of attention grabbers you might use depending on which type of essay<\/a> you\u2019re writing.<\/p>\n

Narrative essay attention grabbers<\/h3>\n

A narrative essay<\/a> tells a story and is one of the few instances in which you\u2019re actually allowed to write in first person.<\/p>\n

If you want to get someone interested in hearing your story, try starting with a dialogue quote<\/a> that might be part of your tale, a strange event from your narrative that intrigues readers, or anything else that will make your audience take notice<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t start with boring old lines like \u201cLast semester, I\u2026,\u201d \u201cWhen I was five, we\u2026,\u201d or \u201cIt was a night I\u2019ll never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n\t
