(These questions might be questions about concepts or arguments that you don\u2019t understand, or questions about the topic itself.)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-write-a-summary-that-sums-it-all-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Summarizing<\/a> main ideas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/logical-fallacies-kill-your-argument\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arguments<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/what-is-a-counterargument\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">counterarguments<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re a little more creative, you might find that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/graphic-organizers-for-writing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drawing images, graphs, or charts<\/a> can also help you visualize and remember key points.<\/p>\n<p>While annotation can involve any or all of the strategies mentioned above, you don\u2019t always have to use each strategy every time you annotate. How you annotate depends on your purpose for annotation.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Annotation Is Helpful<\/h2>\n<p>You may be thinking that all that circling, underlining, and writing of notes is more of a waste of time than anything. You might be thinking that you\u2019d have lots more time to actually <i>write <\/i>your paper if you didn\u2019t spend time annotating.<\/p>\n<p>Yes and no. While it\u2019s true that you may have more time to write your paper, it may not be as well-written as if you had annotated your sources.<\/p>\n<p>And if you fail to annotate, you may end up taking a lot longer to write your paper than you might think.<\/p>\n<p><b>Below are two reasons that annotation is helpful (and how it can actually save you time).<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Annotation can help you understand (and therefore remember) information<\/h3>\n<p>If you read through something quickly, you tend to skip over words and miss key ideas. You might get to the end of an entire piece without really understanding what you\u2019ve read.<\/p>\n<p>If you annotate, however, you can note key points, summarize ideas, and ask questions. This interaction with the text forces you to slow down and think about what you just read.<\/p>\n<h3>Annotation can help you write a better research paper (and help you write it faster)<\/h3>\n<p>Though you might think that taking notes on all of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/writing-a-research-paper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resources<\/a> isn\u2019t necessary and takes up too much time, it can actually be very beneficial <i>and <\/i>a time-saver.<\/p>\n<p>When you read through sources, taking notes on the information helps you not only understand the information more completely, but also remember where the information is located.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick example. Let\u2019s say you have seven journal articles as sources for your paper. If you\u2019re using articles from professional journals, each article could easily range from 10-20 pages.<\/p>\n<p>If you read the information but don\u2019t annotate the articles, how will you remember where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/put-quote-essay-like-pro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that <i>perfect<\/i> quote<\/a> was? How will you remember what the key point of the article was that you wanted to include in your paper?<\/p>\n<p>Annotation helps you keep track of the information you want to use in your paper. While this is certainly a good reason, there are other reasons you should annotate. For instance, you might annotate to understand content, respond to a prompt, or examine literary or rhetorical strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Your purpose for annotating will inevitably change how and what you annotate, so understand your purpose <i>before <\/i>you begin reading AND have a goal in mind while you annotate.<\/p>\n<p><b>Here are a few annotation strategies (based on your purpose for annotating):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Annotate to understand the content and\/or learn key vocabulary. <\/b>Highlight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/turn-a-good-thesis-statement-great\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thesis statements<\/a>, summarize main ideas, and circle or highlight important terms. (Writing definitions in the margins can also be a useful way to remember more challenging terms.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Annotate to respond to a specific question or assignment prompt. <\/b>If you\u2019re asked to include personal reactions or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-make-connections-between-a-text-and-your-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relate the writing to your own life<\/a>, look for those sections that you react to most strongly. If you\u2019re asked to evaluate, analyze, or simply summarize, then you\u2019ll annotate to answer the prompt. In other words, if you\u2019re asked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-analyze-an-article\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analyze<\/a> an argument, don\u2019t simply include whether you agree or disagree\u2014focus on analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Annotate to examine a text for literary or rhetorical strategies. <\/b>While you may not be able to identify some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/literary-terms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">literary<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/rhetorical-devices-essays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rhetorical strategies<\/a> on the first read, it\u2019s important that you keep them in mind and jot down points if you notice them. On your second and third reads, take note of the specific strategies you\u2019re examining. If, for instance, your focus is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/character-analysis-that-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">character analysis<\/a>, look for physical descriptions, comments, and actions that reveal character. Annotations consist of highlighting key points and summarizing main ideas in the margins.<\/p>\n<p><b>Take Note:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Keep highlighted text to a minimum<\/b>. Notice that in this example only a few key points are highlighted. Don\u2019t go highlighter crazy just because you can. Huge numbers of highlighted sections just change the color of the text. If everything is highlighted, nothing stands out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Keep summaries brief. <\/b>Notice that this example summarizes paragraphs in one or two sentences. Don\u2019t paraphrase the entire paragraph. Hit only the key points.
