More than a few of the devices on this list might be new to you. And if your knowledge of Greek and Latin is as limited as mine, you might have trouble pronouncing at least a few terms. Don\u2019t worry too much about the pronunciation, though.<\/p>\n

Focus instead on the definitions and examples. Then consider how you might incorporate them into your own writing.<\/p>\n

#1 Alliteration<\/h3>\n

Using words with the same (or similar) beginning sounds:<\/p>\n

On <\/i>F<\/i><\/b>riday, we had <\/i>f<\/i><\/b>abulous, <\/i>fi<\/i><\/b>ery, <\/i>f<\/i><\/b>iesta salsa.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

#2 Anadiplosis<\/h3>\n

Repeating a word or phrase at the end of a sentence or clause at the beginning of the next:<\/p>\n

Their dinner was the beginning of a long dining <\/i>nightmare<\/i><\/b>, a <\/i>nightmare <\/i><\/b>that would last for hours.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

#3 Antanagoge<\/h3>\n

Contradicting a negative comment with something positive:<\/p>\n

The enchiladas I had for dinner last night were the worst I\u2019ve ever eaten, but at least the company uses only locally sourced products.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

#4 Apophasis<\/h3>\n

Bringing something to readers\u2019 attention by dismissing it or pretending to deny or mention it:<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not saying that it was the server\u2019s fault that it took over an hour for us to receive our drinks, but I did see him, on more than one occasion, standing around doing nothing.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

#5 Brachyology<\/h3>\n

Using a grammatically incorrect abbreviated expression:<\/p>\n

Morning. Lunch this afternoon?<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Think of it as text-speak. You don\u2019t need to use complete sentences to get your point across.<\/p>\n

Using words in the reverse of grammatical order to create a stylistic effect or create emphasis:<\/p>\n

#7 Germinatio<\/h3>\n

Repeating words (or groups of words) within the same sentence:<\/p>\n

#8 Litotes<\/h3>\n

Using an understatement to state the obvious through a negative, double negative, or opposite comment:<\/p>\n

This restaurant certainly doesn\u2019t serve a bad piece of pie, does it?<\/i><\/p>\n\t
