I\u2019m here to show you how to write a term paper from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>It may not be the easiest essay you\u2019ll ever write, but students who put in the right amount of time and effort often feel a real sense of accomplishment (and they\u2019re more likely to get a good grade).<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s get into how to write a term paper, shall we?<\/p>\n<h2>What Is a Term Paper?<\/h2>\n<p>Before we talk about <i>how <\/i>to write a term paper, we should probably clarify <i>what<\/i> it is first.<\/p>\n<p>A term paper is a rather long essay about a topic covered during the&nbsp;semester or other type of term. Its topic comes from material covered in class. However, it\u2019s important to note that you\u2019ll need to get additional sources, but we\u2019ll get to that in a minute.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, you\u2019ll have to argue a point in a term paper. But there are other skills you\u2019ll have to show to bring it all together. You aren\u2019t too limited in the scope of your term paper, but there aren\u2019t an infinite number of choices either.<\/p>\n<p>But how do you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-narrow-a-topic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">narrow it down<\/a> to just one?&nbsp;The first thing to do is read through the options and see which one most catches your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Still can\u2019t decide? Choose something you already have a fair amount of background knowledge about. This will make your research process much faster because you\u2019ll already know which sources to start with.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that, while having some background knowledge about your term paper topic can be an asset, you don\u2019t want to have a preconceived notion of what your thesis statement or supporting details are going to be.<\/p>\n<p>Term papers are supposed to be based off research, not the unsupported opinions of the writers. But while you may be interested in something like jazz, for instance, that\u2019s way too broad for an appropriate topic. So you have to narrow it down until you have a question.<\/p>\n<p>What burning questions do you have? Your topic should not be a concrete answer. Instead, it should be a point you can make through providing support from your sources. Sticking with&nbsp;the jazz example, here are some questions I might have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why did jazz start in New Orleans?<\/li>\n<li>Was there any conflict between white and black jazz musicians?<\/li>\n<li>What types of impacts did jazz have on society as a whole?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even these questions may be too broad. Then check out those references yourself.<\/p>\n<p>By the time you have your topic perfected, you should have a couple of sources already selected. But you\u2019ll need many more to give a well-rounded view of the point you\u2019re trying to make in your term paper.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll want to include both <a href=\"https:\/\/library.ithaca.edu\/sp\/subjects\/primary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>primary<\/i> and <i>secondary<\/i> sources<\/a>. What constitutes a primary source can depend on what general subject you&#8217;re writing about. Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Literature: <\/strong>The book or poem you\u2019re writing about.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Science fields: <\/strong>Notes and observations from an original experiment or field study.<\/li>\n<li><strong>History: <\/strong>Accounts from witnesses of the actual event or time period you\u2019re writing about, as well as autobiographies of people you&#8217;re studying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Secondary sources are analyses of these primary sources from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/essay-writing-blog\/apply-craap-test-essay-sources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">credible sources<\/a>. You can determine the credibility of a source by who wrote it, whether it\u2019s as unbiased as possible, and whether the author included references to other credible sources.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re getting information from your sources, it\u2019s important to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/10-note-taking-strategies-to-write-a-better-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">take notes<\/a>. However, it\u2019s important that you&#8217;re able to fully discuss each point, so having too many might not give you the space and time to fully flesh out your argument.<\/p>\n<h3>Outlining your term paper<\/h3>\n<p>Once you have your thesis statement just the way you want it, it\u2019s time to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Outline-a-Term-Paper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">create your outline<\/a>. This is crucial to staying on topic throughout your paper and not wasting time wondering if you\u2019ve left anything out. This sets the stage and gives readers general information that helps them put your argument into context.<\/p>\n<p>I also included sources in the body paragraphs. Doing this will help you when you later have to cite your sources.<\/p>\n<h3>Drafting your term paper<\/h3>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/correcting-1870721_640-e1497923674576.jpg\" alt=\"how to write a term paper\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5851 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20500%20333%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"how to write a term paper\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/correcting-1870721_640-e1497923674576.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve gotten an outline written down, it\u2019s time to start getting into the details. I like to take the same document my outline is written in and simply fill out the points with more detail\u2014reformatting it as I go, of course.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Pro Tip:<\/span> <\/strong>Save a copy of your original outline in a separate document in case you need it later for any reason.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When you\u2019re writing, be sure to include references (<a href=\"https:\/\/owl.english.purdue.edu\/owl\/section\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in the appropriate formatting<\/a>) for any ideas that aren\u2019t originally yours. This not only helps your argument appear more credible, but also helps ensure you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-avoid-plagiarism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">avoid unintentional plagiarism<\/a> and getting failed for plagiarism.<\/p>\n<h2>The Finishing Touches<\/h2>\n<p>After you\u2019ve written your term paper, take some time to edit it. Nothing\u2019s perfect on the first draft. Most things aren\u2019t even perfect on the <i>second <\/i>draft.<\/p>\n<p>When you edit, you\u2019re not just looking out for spelling and grammatical errors.
