If the site isn\u2019t maintained, the information is likely outdated and not useful for your paper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>R<\/b>elevance: The information should be relevant to your research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>A<\/b>uthority: The website\u2019s content should be written by people with appropriate credentials, such as academic degrees or other related experience in the subject.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A<\/strong>ccuracy: The website should be accurate. This refers to content as well as spelling or grammar errors. (If writers can\u2019t pay attention to grammar, they may not pay attention to the accuracy of their information.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>P<\/b>urpose: Think about the website\u2019s purpose. If the site is a commercial website (.com), its purpose is to sell something. Thus, the language and content might be biased. Sounds a little too much like \u201chave it all,\u201d doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p>If you didn\u2019t pay much attention to the drug name and simply cited information, you\u2019d be citing fake content about a fake drug. Look out for satirical \u201cnews\u201d websites<\/h4>\n<p>Satirical \u201cnews\u201d websites aren\u2019t trying to write fake news to get people to believe lies. They\u2019re writing satire. The website\u2019s content, though, is designed to look real, and the articles may fool people if they aren\u2019t paying attention (or are a little bit gullible).<\/p>\n<p>Take <i>The Onion<\/i> for example. This website is comprised entirely of satire, yet you might mistake some information for truth.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a sample headline: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonion.com\/article\/cackling-trump-reveals-dinner-guests-theyve-all-ju-55794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cackling Trump Reveals to Dinner Guests They\u2019ve All Just Eaten Single Piece of His Tax Returns<\/a>.&nbsp;This brief article is just as the title suggests. It explains that dinner guests ate pieces of President Trump\u2019s tax returns.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, this is a bogus article, but those not familiar with the fact the Trump refuses to release his taxes may not understand the humor in the article.<\/p>\n<h4>3. While the information on the site may be accurate, it\u2019s likely that the content only supports one side of the argument: that beef is healthy and should be consumed by most everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t just rely on the name of the organization alone, however, to determine potential bias. Take a look at the \u201cabout us\u201d section. If you know something about the sponsoring organization, you\u2019ll know more about the purpose of the site.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the \u201cabout us\u201d section of Beef Nutrition reads as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cBeefNutrition.org is funded by the Beef Checkoff Program and managed by the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.beefusa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> National Cattlemen&#8217;s Beef Association<\/a>, (a contractor to the Beef Checkoff). Registered dietitians and nutrition communication experts at NCBA work on behalf of America\u2019s farmers and ranchers to provide the latest in beef research and resources to help you and your clients live better with lean beef.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s clear from this description that the website is \u201cpro beef\u201d and is doing everything it can to promote beef consumption.
