Words and phrases like \u201ccouple years,\u201d \u201cpretty big,\u201d and \u201cput into\u201d don\u2019t exactly scream professional and formal. They aren\u2019t worthy of an academic essay.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Example #2:<\/span> <\/b><i>Since 2015, there has been a 22% increase in the amount of chemical pollutants dumped into the Cook River.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This sentence replaces those basic, nondescript words with more formal word choices to create a professional tone appropriate for an academic essay.<\/p>\n<p><b>NOTE<\/b>: Example #2 uses a statistic. Remember, if you\u2019re using information from a source, you\u2019ll need to cite it according to the citation style used in your class. Exactly.<\/p>\n<p>So if you\u2019ve never heard of the word, why add it to your paper just because you think it sounds formal?
