Use your new long-range lens to take amazing closeups of the lions.<\/p>\n<p><b>The wrong way to enjoy this breathtaking moment: <\/b>Leave the tour behind, and strike out on your own to get a once-in-a-lifetime selfie with a lion.<\/p>\n<p>Sure that selfie would be amazing, but it\u2019s not worth the risk. On your African safari, it\u2019s always wise to listen to your tour guide (and stay a safe distance from the lions). After all, she\u2019s the expert, and she\u2019s there to protect you and help you enjoy your experience.<\/p>\n<p>Consider me your guide too\u2014one who\u2019s here to help protect you from poor grades and to help you analyze an article the right way.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s get started on how to analyze an article by first looking at the wrong way to do it. You won\u2019t fully understand the arguments of the article if you only skim the content. Though an article might contain a stray metaphor or two, the goal of an article isn\u2019t to tell a story. These are key points to notice. Write about what confuses you, and ask questions about the content.<\/li>\n<li>Identify and take note of key arguments. Articles often uses headings to identify specific sections. If no headings are included, look for changes in topics at the beginnings of paragraphs.<\/li>\n<li>Look for patterns in the writing. Does the author use the same type of reasoning, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/ethos-pathos-logos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">logic<\/a>, or evidence to support arguments throughout? Does the author use humor, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-control-the-tone-of-an-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is the tone serious<\/a>? How do the arguments hold up?<\/p>\n<p><b>Here\u2019s what to look for:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Evidence: <\/b>What type of evidence does the writer use to support the argument? Does he\/she use statistics, examples, or original data? Remember, writers shouldn\u2019t simply make statements without sufficient evidence to support their claims. It\u2019s like a little kid asking a question and a parent replying, \u201cbecause I said so.\u201d There\u2019s no real evidence to support the parent\u2019s statement. Does the writer cite Wikipedia or statistics from a peer-reviewed, scholarly article? Clearly, there\u2019s a difference between the two.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Persuasion: <\/b>If the goal of the article is to persuade, you\u2019ll need to consider whether the writer is convincing. What makes the piece convincing, or why isn\u2019t it convincing?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Need help on what questions to ask? Here&#8217;s a pretty solid list of what to consider when analyzing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olc.edu\/~khecrow\/webfolder\/writing\/How_to_Analyze_a_Journal_Article.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a research article<\/a> OR <a href=\"https:\/\/primarysourcenexus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Newspaper_Article_Guiding_Analysis_Questions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a newspaper<\/a> (or other informational-type articles).<\/p>\n<h3>Look for what\u2019s missing<\/h3>\n<p>Even if a writer supports the arguments presented in the article, it doesn\u2019t mean that there isn\u2019t something missing.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, let\u2019s say that a writer argues that more students should be eligible for student loan forgiveness.
