After you\u2019ve written something like \u201ca writing instrument\u201d as your definition, what\u2019s left to say? Exactly. Not much.<\/p>\n<p>This means that basic nouns\u2014such as pencil, cow, or corn\u2014usually aren\u2019t good topic choices for a definition essay.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, choose a word that is a bit more abstract and can mean something different to just about everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you choose \u201chome\u201d as the topic for your paper. With this topic, there\u2019s <i>so<\/i> much more to write about beyond the standard dictionary definition of \u201ca dwelling or place of residence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <i>house <\/i>might be limited to this definition, but a <i>home <\/i>can be so much more than simply a place to live. To some, home will always be the place where they grew up. To others, home is any place where their family might be. Still others might travel a lot and feel home is wherever they sleep for the night.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Bonus&nbsp;tip on choosing topics: <\/b>Pick a topic you know something about. Define by function<\/h4>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><b>Explain how something works or what it does. <\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If you\u2019re defining a tangible object, such as a cellphone, you might explain how it works or its purpose. For instance, you might briefly explain various features\u2014such as apps, texting, calling, and the camera\u2014but your real focus would likely be its function in society. How do people use phones? What do they mean to people?<\/p>\n<p>You might also choose a topic that is far more abstract, such as&nbsp;the term \u201cjustice.\u201d In this case, think about the function of justice in society. How does justice work? (This is an excellent example of how you can combine patterns to create an extended definition.)<\/p>\n<p>If your paper\u2019s focus is something a little more subjective, such as&nbsp;\u201cthe perfect party,\u201d you can explain what parts make up the perfect party, how you put the party together, and\/or how you&nbsp;should organize it. Here, you could also combine patterns and include a discussion of the function of a party on a college campus.<\/p>\n<h4>3. Define by analysis<\/h4>\n<blockquote><p><em><b>Explain how the term fits into a larger group, how it&#8217;s similar, and how it&#8217;s different from others in the group.<\/b><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Using this pattern, you create a definition that explains how your term is either similar to or different from the larger group.&nbsp;For instance, if you\u2019re defining \u201ca terrible professor,\u201d you might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-write-a-compare-and-contrast-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\">compare<\/a> the professor to other professors at the college.<\/p>\n<p>What makes a terrible professor so terrible? Do terrible&nbsp;professors have different course policies than the non-terrible professors? Are their grading scales a nightmare? Do they run their classes like a military boot camp?<\/p>\n<h4>4. Define by what the term does <i>not<\/i> mean<\/h4>\n<blockquote><p><em><b>Explain what the word is not.<\/b><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In some cases, it\u2019s easier to explain what something is <i>not<\/i>&nbsp;rather than what it is.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, it might be hard to define the perfect date. It might be easier, and more effective, to explain what the perfect date is not.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the perfect date doesn\u2019t spend the entire evening complaining about her roommate. Maybe the perfect date is a guy who doesn\u2019t spend the whole night checking sports scores and the progress of his fantasy football team.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Support the definition with clear and specific examples<\/h3>\n<p>Examples are the evidence you\u2019ll use to support your case and create your definition. They are essentially the body of your paper.<\/p>\n<p>Choose examples that are easy to understand and written in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/grammar-rules-blog\/how-to-become-a-better-writer-smart\/\" target=\"_blank\">clear, specific language<\/a>. Explain how this type of professor fits into the larger group of professors on campus.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You might explain that a good professor provides study guides a week before exams to help students prepare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A good professor also has interesting and engaging lectures to help you stay awake through three-hour classes. Here, you could include an example of a history professor who dressed up in period costumes and lectured as if he actually took part in the Civil War.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You could then switch to another pattern and explain what a good professor is<i> not. <\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You might explain that a good professor doesn&#8217;t lock the door at precisely 8:00 a.m. when the class starts and refuse to let anyone in after class begins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>You might include a brief example about the time you overslept for your 8:00 a.m. literature class but rushed across campus in a desperate attempt to make it on time. When you arrived, breathless, at 8:04 a.m., you found the door locked with the professor lecturing.
