You\u2019ve written a narrative essay or two by now, and they\u2019ve been pretty good. But they haven\u2019t given you that sense of pride that you get from, say, a well-supported argumentative essay.<\/p>\n

So when your instructor assigns another narrative essay, you\u2019re looking to just churn something out without giving it any pizzazz.<\/p>\n

Wait a minute!<\/i><\/p>\n

What if I told you writing an exciting narrative essay isn\u2019t just easy, but it\u2019s also pretty fun? You\u2019d probably look at me like this.<\/p>\n

Well, that\u2019s exactly<\/i> what I\u2019m going to prove to you right now. You don\u2019t have to be the next Shakespeare to write an awesome narrative essay. You just have to abide by a few simple rules. And don\u2019t worry\u2014I\u2019ll let you know exactly what those rules are.<\/p>\n

But first, let\u2019s have a quick refresher.<\/p>\n

What Is a Narrative Essay?<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s pretty simple really. A narrative essay tells a story. It has lots of descriptive elements, and it\u2019s quite different from other styles of essays.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not an <\/i>argumentative essay<\/i><\/a>.<\/i> You\u2019re not trying to prove something against an alternate point of view. There should be a purpose to your story, but you don\u2019t have to convince anyone you\u2019re right<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not an explanatory essay<\/i>. Explanatory essays<\/a> can get kind of technical because, usually, they describe how something works. You\u2019re describing an event.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a <\/i>5-paragraph essay<\/i><\/a>. Many students fall into the 5-paragraph format (introduction, three body paragraphs, and conclusion) by default. Don\u2019t fall into that trap! While it\u2019s possible to only write five paragraphs for your essay, you\u2019re not limited to this structure.<\/p>\n

The easiest way to think about a narrative essay is just to think of the word narrate <\/i>and to consider yourself the narrator<\/i>. There are tons of examples of narration in both literature and film. One of my personal favorite narrators is Mister Sam Elliott from The Big Lebowski<\/i>.<\/p>\n
