It has been studied by professionals and amateurs alike. While this might give you a wealth of information to look through, it also gives you a lot of non-credible sources.<\/p>\n<p>The key is to look for clues for credibility, which include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Authority:<\/b> Authority describes a person (or organization) who has the right credentials to speak on the issue. For the nature vs. nurture debate, this might include professors, psychologists, and neurobiologists.<\/li>\n<li><b>Experience:<\/b> An experienced author is one that is close to the issue. Some nature vs. nurture articles mention twin studies. The twins, their families, and the researchers involved in these studies would be experienced authors because they\u2019ve directly dealt with the issue at hand.<\/li>\n<li><b>Established:<\/b> Established writers are those who have gained credibility from the objectivity and accuracy of &nbsp;their past writings. It divides people into two categories&#8211;orchids and dandelions.<\/p>\n<p>Orchids are sensitive to environment and only thrive when they have the right support system. Dandelions, on the other hand, get along fine in almost any environment.<\/p>\n<p>This is starting to sound like a pro-nurture article, right? Reading further, you\u2019ll see that the article says that certain genes control sensitivity to one\u2019s environment. So it\u2019s biology, or <i>nature<\/i>, at the root of it all.<\/p>\n<p>This article has credibility based on establishment. It suggests that the twins\u2019 genetics have more to do with their development because, even though they were raised apart, they have similar personalities, learned to walk on the same day, and even got chicken pox on the same day.<\/p>\n<p>While some of the events the girls experienced may have been coincidence, their overall development and demeanor are still very similar.<\/p>\n<p>The experiences of the twins and their adoptive families provides the basis for credibility for this article. It discusses identical twins who have different sexual orientation. One might assume that because identical twins have identical genes, that nurture would lead to one identifying as gay and one as straight.<\/p>\n<p>However, the article goes on to say that nature is the ultimate determinator in this regard. It quotes psychology professor Michael Bailey as saying, \u201c\u2018whatever causes sexual orientation is strongly influenced by prenatal biology,\u2019\u201d specifically exposure to certain hormones.<\/p>\n<p>This article uses both authority and experience to establish credibility. Web. 12 June 2012.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><b>Pro-Nurture Article 2: <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2012\/11\/23\/in-defense-of-nurture-jesse-prinz-s-beyond-human-nature.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>In Defence of Nurture: Jesse Prinz\u2019s \u201cBeyond Human Nature\u201d<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>In this article, the author, Robert Herritt, doesn\u2019t debate on the side of nurture, but rather he brings the views of philosopher and cognitive psychologist, Jesse Prinz, to the foreground. Herritt recognizes that nurture supporters are rare, but notes that Prinz says a person\u2019s environment affects \u201cthe way we think, learn language, acquire knowledge, choose sexual partners, and make moral judgments\u201d more than genetics.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, Herritt discusses Prinz\u2019s book, which explains his views more in-depth.<\/p>\n<p>Herritt establishes Prinz\u2019s credibility by acknowledging his role as a philosopher and cognitive scientist at the City University of New York. It\u2019s not actually saying that nature has a larger influence than nurture or vice versa. It does argue, however, that a person\u2019s <i>perception<\/i> that nurture is more important allows for better development. You <i>could <\/i>argue that this would make it a pro-nurture article, but just because a person <i>believes<\/i> environment is more important doesn\u2019t necessarily make it so.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Wolford, the article\u2019s author, establishes his credibility in two ways&#8211;he\u2019s a very active science journalist who is respected in his field, and he cites his sources so readers can look at the original data he is reporting on.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>MLA Citation:<\/p>\n<p>Wolford, Ben. \u201cNature vs. Nurture Is Beside the Point; Science Shows Belief in Environment\u2019s Importance Makes a Difference.\u201d <i>MedicalDaily.com<\/i>. Web. 5 Sept. 2014.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>Neither Article 2: <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-scientist.com\/?articles.view\/articleNo\/31233\/title\/Beyond-Nature-vs--Nurture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Beyond Nature vs. Nurture<\/b><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>This article goes against a nature\/nurture dichotomy. It instead suggests that the two influences are inseparable from each other. Most other writers and scholars hold the view that both have different roles in people\u2019s lives, but this article takes it further, noting that the line is very fuzzy&#8211;that it\u2019s not a competition but rather a partnership.<\/p>\n<p>The authors of this article both hold PhDs and work at UC Berkeley.
