You\u2019ve written many other types of essays for many different classes, so how is this any different?<\/p>\n<p>First things first\u2026 a reflective essay is one in which you <i>reflect<\/i> on your personality, places you\u2019ve been, people you\u2019ve met, or experiences that have influenced you. This type of essay lets you tell the reader who you are and what\/who has made you that way.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike most other types of essays you may have written, reflective essays typically don\u2019t deal with researching facts and figures. They are much more personal in nature and can be more fluid in structure and style.<\/p>\n<p>It can be tempting to just jump right into writing, but hold on! However, some rules still apply. The parts of your introduction to include in your outline are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/good-hook-sentences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hook<\/a><\/strong>: you want to grab your reader\u2019s attention from the very start. If you\u2019re telling about an experience, give a quick preview of the most exciting part of that story.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-write-a-thesis-statement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thesis statement<\/a>:<\/strong> In a reflective essay, the thesis statement will usually include a brief statement of what your essay is about as well as how the specific person, place, or experience has influenced you. You will expand on this later, so don\u2019t give away <i>too<\/i> much in the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alice\u2019s introduction might go something like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I don\u2019t know how I had gotten myself into such a mess, but I found myself running down a seemingly endless path with the Red Queen\u2019s entire court shouting, \u201cOff with her head!\u201d I had long yearned for adventure and excitement, but my time in Wonderland made me realize that adventure comes with some serious risks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>Body<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2.png\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3315 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2.png\" alt=\"2\" width=\"200\" height=\"100\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3315 alignleft lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20200%20100%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"2\" width=\"200\" height=\"100\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/2.png\"><\/a>The next part of your outline is perhaps the most important. Without your reflective essay outline, the body can get muddled and confusing. I can\u2019t tell you <i>exactly<\/i> how to organize the body of your essay because every essay is going to be different. However, I do have a couple of tips.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are writing about an experience or an event, <strong>use a chronology that makes sense<\/strong>. It doesn\u2019t have to be completely linear, but if you jump around in the timeline too much, it can confuse both you and the reader. Laying out the important parts in the outline will help you figure out in what order to put everything.<\/li>\n<li>No matter what you\u2019re writing your reflective essay about&#8211;an experience, person or place&#8211;you should<strong> include the impact it has made<\/strong> <strong>and what, if anything, you learned<\/strong>. This should be at least as long of a section as the description of the event, person or place. It\u2019s what shows off who you are and it\u2019s what the reader will be most interested in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The body paragraphs of Alice\u2019s reflective outline may look something like this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Following the white rabbit down the rabbit hole\n<ol>\n<li>Description of what happened<\/li>\n<li>Learning to look before I leap<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Meeting the Caterpillar\n<ol>\n<li>Description of what happened<\/li>\n<li>I learned how to control my size<\/li>\n<li>I started to realize just how strange the people were in Wonderland<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mad Tea Party\n<ol>\n<li>Description of what happened<\/li>\n<li>Although a lot of fun, the tea party was very stressful<\/li>\n<li>The people I met were progressively crazier<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Croquet with the Red Queen\n<ol>\n<li>Description of what happened<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s very hard to play croquet when the other person is cheating and threatening to behead you<\/li>\n<li>It was at this point when I realized that Wonderland had no rules, and that a world without rules is insane<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As you can see, Alice\u2019s timeline includes different events within the entire experience and with a moment of reflection on each. The final lesson learned is the epiphany&#8211;the aha! moment.<\/p>\n<p>Your outline does not have to look just like this. It could be a summary of the entire experience, followed by what you learned from it.
