Take a breath. Just relax.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m here to answer these and other questions you may have about how to write dialogue in an essay. I\u2019ll take you through the main <i>what, when, why, how, and where<\/i> of writing dialogue:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>What<\/i> is dialogue?<\/li>\n<li><i>When<\/i> is it appropriate to use dialogue in your essay?<\/li>\n<li><i>Why<\/i> should you use dialogue?<\/li>\n<li><i>How<\/i> to write dialogue in an essay<\/li>\n<li><i>Where<\/i> can you get more information about using dialogue?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Dialogue: What It Is and What It Isn\u2019t<\/h2>\n<p>In order for you to know <i>how<\/i> to write dialogue in an essay, you should know <i>what exactly<\/i> dialogue is first.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s really pretty simple. Dialogue is just a conversation between two or more people. It can be used in movies, plays, fiction or, in this case, essays. Dialogue should <i>not<\/i> be confused with quotations from outside sources.<\/p>\n<p>Because quotation marks are used with both dialogue and quoting directly from sources, it\u2019s important to know the difference between the two. Here&nbsp;are the main differences&nbsp;to help clear up any confusion you might have:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Dialogue<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>Direct quotes<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Conversation between 2 or more people<\/td>\n<td>Information from an outside source used word-for-word in your essay<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Used as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/good-hook-sentences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hook<\/a> or as part of a larger story<\/td>\n<td>Used as a hook or to provide support for an argument<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A big point of confusion often comes from directly quoting dialogue. In this case, think about what you\u2019re using that dialogue for&#8211;to demonstrate a point in your argument. Therefore, quoting dialogue would fall under the <i>direct quote<\/i> category.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you know what dialogue is, it\u2019s time to explore when to use it in your essay.<\/p>\n<h2>Knowing When to Use Dialogue in Your Essay and Why You Should Bother<\/h2>\n<p>As I mentioned before, dialogue is used all over the place, especially in movies, television, novels, and plays. For you and for the purposes of this advice, however, dialogue only really appears in one kind of essay&#8211;the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-write-a-narrative-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">narrative essay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why is this the case? It\u2019s because other types of essays (i.e., argumentative and expository essays) aim to claim. They tell readers of your past experiences. Many of those experiences include other people and the conversations you&#8217;ve had with them.<\/p>\n<p>Using dialogue in argumentative and expository essays usually won\u2019t add to your argument and may actually make it weaker. This is because your friends and family are probably not the best sources to &nbsp;get your support from&#8211;at least not for essays. Instead, it\u2019s a better plan to directly quote or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/?p=2703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paraphrase<\/a> from experts in the topic that your essay is about.<\/p>\n<p>Using dialogue in narrative essays is a great technique. Imagine reading a novel in which none of the characters spoke, or a movie in which none of the actors had a single line. Pretty boring, right? Well the same concept can apply to your narrative essay.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Write Dialogue in an Essay<\/h2>\n<p>Now that you understand when to use dialogue, we can get into the nitty-gritty of proper formatting. (That is, just in case your teacher hasn\u2019t covered it, or if you need a little bit of a review.) The rules for writing dialogue in your essay break down into two main categories: proper use of quotation marks and where to put other punctuation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Quotation Marks (U.S. rules)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>There are three main rules about quotation marks you need to know. They\u2019re listed below, followed by examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule 1:<\/strong> Use double quotation marks to indicate that a person is speaking in your writing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i>Example: When I was young, my mother told me, \u201cFollow your passion and the money will come.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule 2:<\/strong> Use single quotation marks around a quote within a quote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i>Example: \u201cWhat did Benjamin Franklin mean when he said, \u2018An investment in knowledge pays the best interest\u2019?\u201d Ms. Jackson asked.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rule 3:<\/strong> If a person in your essay has more than a paragraph of dialogue, use the opening quotation marks at the beginning of each paragraph, but use closing quotation marks only at the end of the dialogue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i>Example: Sarah nodded and said, \u201cI think you\u2019re right. We can\u2019t get very far on this project if we can\u2019t work together.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i>\u201cBut now there\u2019s hardly any time left.
