No need to stress. Help is here. I am going to give you some guidelines and sample research paper topics to help you jumpstart your writing.<\/p>\n

Guidelines for Choosing Research Paper Topics<\/h2>\n

Let me start off by saying that there is no such thing as the \u201cperfect topic.\u201d<\/i> There are research paper topics that are better than others, however, and I\u2019m going to help you be on the \u201cbetter\u201d side rather than the \u201cothers\u201d side<\/p>\n

Pick something that interests you. <\/b>If you\u2019re not interested before you start<\/i> your research, you’re probably not going to be very thrilled while you’re spending hours actually<\/i> doing<\/i> the research.<\/p>\n

Make sure there\u2019s already information on your topic. <\/b>Most research papers are going to discuss the topic in relation to what\u2019s already been said about it. Even if you disagree with what other scholars are saying<\/i>, you have to know their arguments in order to refute them.<\/p>\n

Come up with a question–one with more than a trivial answer. <\/b>Coming up with a question will drive your research until you find an answer. Plus, coming up with a concise answer to that question can give you a pretty easy thesis statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You want to make sure that the question is one that doesn’t have a straightforward answer. A question like \u201cWhen was Abraham Lincoln assassinated?\u201d wouldn’t work because there\u2019s no way to fill up an entire paper with an answer that is already agreed upon and so simple.<\/p>\n

(By the way, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 15, 1865.)<\/p>\n

You probably noticed that a lot of these research paper topics sound like argumentative essay<\/a> topics. You’re not wrong. In a way, a research paper can be viewed as an extended argumentative essay.<\/p>\n

The research paper argues a claim (your thesis), but is going to be a lot longer than a simple argumentative essay. It\u2019s also going to be written in a less opinionated manner because it will be based both on existing scholarly materials, as well as primary sources such as charts, data, newspaper articles, letters, artifacts, and media sources.<\/p>\n
