Your middle school and high school teachers probably told you something like, \u201cAn analytical essay is writing that analyzes a text.\u201d\n<p><i>Helpful, right? Um, not so much.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>First, it might be more useful to explain what an analytical essay <i>isn\u2019t<\/i> before getting to what it <i>is<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>An analytical essay&nbsp;isn&#8217;t&nbsp;a summary.<\/b>&nbsp;Though this may seem obvious in theory, it\u2019s more difficult in practice. If you read your essay and it sounds a lot like a book report, it\u2019s probably only <i>summarizing<\/i> events or characters.<\/p>\n<p>One way to figure out if you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-write-a-good-essay-commentary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summarizing instead of analyzing<\/a> is to look at your support. Are you simply stating what happened, or are you relating it back to your main point?<\/p>\n<p>Okay, so what is an analytical essay, <i>exactly<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>Usually, it\u2019s writing that has a more narrowed focus than a summary. Analytical essays usually concentrate on <i>how<\/i> the book or poem was written\u2014for example, how certain themes present themselves in the story, or how the use of metaphor brings a certain meaning to a poem.<\/p>\n<p>In short, this type of essay requires you to look at the smaller parts of the work to help shed light on the larger picture.<\/p>\n<p>An example of a prompt\u2014and <i>the<\/i> example I&#8217;m going to use for the rest of this post\u2014could be something like: Analyze the theme of sacrifice in the Harry Potter series. (Note: there might be some spoilers, but I figured everyone who was planning on reading the books has done so already\u2014or at least has seen the movies.)<\/p>\n<h2>One Way To Form Your Analytical Essay Outline<\/h2>\n<p>There are quite a few ways to organize your analytical essay, but no matter how you choose to write it, your essay should always have three main parts:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Introduction<\/li>\n<li>Body<\/li>\n<li>Conclusion<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I&#8217;ll get into the nitty-gritty of this soon, but for all you visual learners, here is a nice representation of all the components that make a great analytical essay outline.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2562\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/analytical_essay_flow-e1413324260708.jpg\" alt=\"analytical essay outline\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2562 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20500%20374%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"analytical essay outline\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/analytical_essay_flow-e1413324260708.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can see that I&#8217;ve added a few more details than just the introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction should include at least three things\u2014a hook, your thesis statement, and a sentence or two describing how you intend to prove your thesis statement.<\/p>\n<p><b>1. You gotta hook \u2018em from the start. <\/b>The first part of your introduction should draw the reader in. This is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/good-hook-sentences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the hook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The hook should be interesting or surprising. You can achieve this by asking a rhetorical question, giving some relevant statistics, or making a statement that\u2019s unusual or controversial.<\/p>\n<p>For my Harry Potter example, I might say, \u201cSince the publication of the first book in the Harry Potter series, <i>Harry Potter and the Philosopher&#8217;s Stone<\/i>, some Christian groups have attacked the books for promoting witchcraft. However, one of the main themes of the books draws inspiration from Christianity itself\u2014that of sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Okay, so that\u2019s two sentences. But it\u2019s got a little bit of controversy and relates to what the rest of the essay will discuss.<\/p>\n<p><b>2. Get to the good stuff\u2014write a killer thesis statement. <\/b>Okay, so now that you&#8217;ve got your reader hooked, you need to start getting to the point. This is where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-to-write-a-thesis-statement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thesis statement<\/a> comes in.<\/p>\n<p>My thesis might be, \u201cThe theme of sacrifice is prevalent throughout the series and is embodied as sacrifice for the greater good, sacrifice for an ultimate gain, and sacrifice to keep a promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>3. It\u2019s time to back up your thesis. <\/b>Let the reader know how you&#8217;re going to prove your claim.<\/p>\n<p>For my example, I would let the reader know that I intend to analyze the instances of Harry\u2019s \u201cdeath,\u201d Voldemort\u2019s sacrifice of his soul in exchange for immortality, and how Snape sacrifices in order to honor a promise made to Lily Potter.<\/p>\n<p>These points will be the building blocks of the body paragraphs.<\/p>\n<h3>Body of Your Analytical Essay Outline<\/h3>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2564\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/body.jpg\" alt=\"analytical essay outline\" width=\"400\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/body.jpg 727w, https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/body-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/body-223x100.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2564 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20400%20179%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"analytical essay outline\" width=\"400\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20400%20179%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/body.jpg 727w, https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/body-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/body-223x100.jpg 223w\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/body.jpg\">The body is where you can start to get really creative and play around with formatting.<\/p>\n<p>In the flowchart, there are three body paragraphs. But that\u2019s because I was trained in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/write-5-paragraph-essay-outline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5-paragraph outline<\/a>. But you can include as many or as few body paragraphs as you want\u2014as long as you end up thoroughly supporting your thesis.<\/p>\n<p>For my outline, each body paragraph includes a topic sentence, followed by three sets of claims, evidence to support those claims, and how that evidence ties back to the topic sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Again, three is not necessarily a magic number here. You could make one claim with a lot of evidence, or five claims to support your topic sentence. But let\u2019s get into it, shall we?<\/p>\n<p><b>1. Develop a strong topic sentence. <\/b>Each topic sentence in each body paragraph of your analytical essay outline should tell the reader exactly what that section is going to be about.<\/p>\n<p>My first body paragraph might start with, \u201cHarry Potter is willing to fulfill prophecy and make the ultimate sacrifice\u2014that of his life\u2014in order to save the rest of the wizarding world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>2. Make your claim. <\/b>The claim should dive into a smaller part of the overarching topic sentence.<\/p>\n<p>The topic sentence I gave can be broken down into several smaller claims\u2014that Harry knew that he was fulfilling prophecy, that he was actually willing to die, and that his death would be of profound significance.<\/p>\n<p><b>3. Provide evidence from the text to back your claim. <\/b>You can\u2019t just go around making claims without any support. You can use quotes or paraphrase parts of the text to add evidence.<\/p>\n<p>For evidence that Harry knew that he was fulfilling prophecy, you could cite the instance in the hall of prophecies with the quote, \u201cand either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>4. Tie that evidence to the topic sentence. <\/b>You have to make it absolutely clear why you included the evidence. If you don\u2019t, your analytical essay runs the risk of being a summary.<\/p>\n<p>For example, with the citing of the prophecy, I would tell the reader that Harry and his friends found said prophecy and figured out that it had to be about him (although there are objections that it could&#8217;ve been referring to Neville, but we\u2019ll leave that out of this example). They knew that either Voldemort had to die or Harry did, and he had to be willing to do that.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;re not needed in the outline, but when you write your final essay, be sure you include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/essay-writing-blog\/how-comedians-teach-you-to-write-good-transition-sentences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">effective transitions<\/a>. Rowling explores several of them through the characters in the <i>Harry Potter <\/i>book series.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This, of course, does not suffice as a full conclusion. To fill it out and give the reader a sense of closure, you can relate the theme to the real world or end with a final quote from the text or the author.<\/p>\n<h2>Use This Downloadable Analytical Essay Outline as a Guide<\/h2>\n<p>Easy, right?
