My stomach sank. &nbsp;I knew our time was limited at best. With Dave and most of the team out of town, I really wasn\u2019t sure what I could do.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Back at my computer, I noticed<a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=130311&amp;authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=EGfP&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=184f989d-a9e2-461b-837c-8a3122176aa6-0&amp;srchindex=1&amp;srchtotal=4&amp;pvs=ps&amp;pohelp=&amp;goback=%2Efps_mark+suster_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*51_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2\"> Mark Suster<\/a> on gchat. &nbsp;He had been tweeting about being in the 500 Startups space earlier that day and I thought I\u2019d see if he could help at all. &nbsp;No, my connection to Mark did not come easy. &nbsp;I had been pinging him since November, 2010 and even wrote up one of his interviews for his weekly <a href=\"http:\/\/thisweekin.com\/thisweekin-venture-capital\/\">This Week in Venture Capital<\/a> (about a 4 hour task). &nbsp;We had a phone conversation a few weeks prior and he had introduced me to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=470973&amp;goback=%2Efps_mark+suster_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*51_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2%2Enpv_130311_*1_*1_NAME*4SEARCH_EGfP_*1_en*4US_*1_*1_*1_184f989d*5a9e2*5461b*5837c*58a3122176aa6*50_1_4_ps_*2_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1\">Rob Angarita<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cramster.com\/\">Cramster<\/a>. &nbsp;Basically, it took me a long time to build a relationship with Mark, but he thinks we\u2019ve got an awesome thing going with Kibin and replies to my emails when he can. &nbsp;Mark agreed to shoot an email to Dave and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=1858175&amp;authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=xcmM&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=8d6be352-4774-457d-b6a5-f45c913b0869-0&amp;srchindex=1&amp;srchtotal=77&amp;pvs=ps&amp;pohelp=&amp;goback=%2Efps_christine+tsai_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*51_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2\">Christine Tsai<\/a>, suggesting us for the upcoming class.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">But I knew I had to keep moving and as I sat pondering my next move, Van suggested that I talk with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=5745019&amp;authType=OPENLINK&amp;authToken=zPoS&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=51014ba1-4be2-42f3-bd98-62f3c24867ca-0&amp;srchindex=1&amp;srchtotal=151&amp;pvs=ps&amp;pohelp=&amp;goback=%2Efps_hong+quan_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*51_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2\">Hong Quan<\/a>, a well-respected mentor at 500Startups. &nbsp;Hong and I connected over Twitter, and then gchat. &nbsp; He agreed to chat further with us and I was able to push for a meeting the very next day.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Our First Visit &#8211; (April 28th)<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">I hopped the CalTrain and arrived at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redrockcoffee.org\/\">Red Rock Caf\u00e9<\/a> in Mountain View, not knowing what to expect. &nbsp;As I sat waiting, I dropped Van a note on gchat. &nbsp;He told me Hong was hanging out in the office and we should just \u201cdrop in\u201d. &nbsp;Jim and I packed our things and headed down the street to 500 Startups.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hong is a sharp guy. &nbsp;He gave us some good advice, but an even better poker face. &nbsp;I left the meeting feeling a little like I had been hit by a bus that had at least a few seconds to slam on the brakes (we were able to crawl away). &nbsp;In a nutshell, Hong made it sound like we weren\u2019t ready for 500. &nbsp;Jim and I walked a few blocks down Castro street in utter dismay.<\/p>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-214 alignright\" title=\"twitterdm\" alt src=\"http:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/twitterdm.jpeg\" width=\"281\" height=\"179\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-214 alignright lazyload\" title=\"twitterdm\" alt src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20281%20179%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" width=\"281\" height=\"179\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/twitterdm.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suddenly, my phone lit up&nbsp;with a DM on Twitter. It was Van. He&nbsp;was wondering why we\u2019d left and suggested we come back and hack for awhile&#8230; try to see if we could meet with Christine. &nbsp;Jim and I trekked back up to the 500 office. &nbsp;Van showed us where we could sit and hang out and said he\u2019d check in on us.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">A few minutes later, I saw Christine and Van across the room, whispering and pointing in our direction. &nbsp;Christine didn\u2019t look like she had time to talk to us, but I had made it obvious I noticed them (I think I waived) and she approached us. &nbsp;We spent the next 20 minutes informally pitching Kibin and demoing the site. &nbsp;She had one concern regarding<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crocodoc.com\/\"> Crocodoc<\/a> and potential overlap with our businesses. But I had previously chatted with one of their founders, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=13926232&amp;authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=2ylV&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=4ea138d3-f8c1-46e7-beca-e56b66d86794-0&amp;srchindex=1&amp;srchtotal=15&amp;pvs=ps&amp;pohelp=&amp;goback=%2Efps_ryan+damico_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*1_*51_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2\">Ryan Damico<\/a>, via email and we aren\u2019t at all competitors. &nbsp;Christine told us that she\u2019d chat with \u201cthe rest of the team\u201d and be in touch.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, at this point we had Jeff, Van, and Mark all sort of vouching for us. &nbsp;Hong had given us some tough love, but apparently he was pulling for us too. &nbsp;Remember, just weeks prior I didn\u2019t know anyone in the 500 family. &nbsp;Not bad.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jim and I left relatively excited and felt like our odds of getting in were pretty good now. It was a pretty crazy day. &nbsp;We went from being excited about our meeting with Hong to feeling pretty terrible, and then back to being excited again, all in the span of a couple hours.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">As I commuted back to San Francisco, I sent an email to Christine thanking her for chatting with us. &nbsp;She replied \u201cnice meeting you\u201d, but that was all. &nbsp;I also emailed Ryan to take initiative in squashing any concern regarding competition, but never heard back from him.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Too Quiet &#8211; (April 29th &#8211; May 10th)<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #444444; line-height: 24px;\">Six days went by without word. &nbsp;I thought we\u2019d have heard something by then so I sent Christine a follow-up email and it took a few days before I heard anything back. &nbsp;She replied with a \u201cwe\u2019ll be in touch soon\u201d type note.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">I didn\u2019t really know what to do now. &nbsp;Were we being considered for the next batch? &nbsp;No clue. &nbsp;I decided to be patient for a bit and wait to hear back from her. &nbsp;In hindsight, this is always a bad idea. &nbsp;When someone is making a critical decision like this and it involves you, never sit around waiting. &nbsp;(<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/?p=205\">continue to part 3&#8230;<\/a><\/em>)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the second part in my story about how Kibin was able to secure a spot in the current 500 Startups class. &nbsp;If you missed the first post, get caught up before reading this one.
