To help you understand, I&#8217;ve divided them into different categories based on their purpose. &nbsp;Here are the categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Addition<\/b>: transition words that build upon an idea, adding one thought to another.<\/li>\n<li><b>Comparison<\/b>: transition words that show the similarities between two ideas.<\/li>\n<li><b>Conclusion<\/b>: transition words that bring an idea to an end.<\/li>\n<li><b>Contrast<\/b>: transition words that show the differences between two ideas.<\/li>\n<li><b>Reason<\/b>: transition words that show the logical connection between two ideas.<\/li>\n<li><b>Result<\/b>: transition words that show the consequences of an idea.<\/li>\n<li><b>Sequence<\/b>: transition words that show the order of ideas in time and space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, transition words serve a variety of purposes. Let me give you an example of how good transition words can help improve your writing.<\/p>\n<p>First, I will write a paragraph using no transition words at all.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sophie was bitten by a black widow when she was a child. Sophie spent several days in the hospital recovering. She still has a red scar on her leg where the spider bit her. Sophie is afraid of spiders. shows the <b>reason<\/b> for Sophie&#8217;s hospital stay.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;To this day&#8221; shows that time has passed since Sophie was bitten and illustrates the <b>sequence<\/b> of events.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;And&#8221; &#8220;moreover,&#8221; and &#8220;therefore.&#8221; These words may sound impressive, but when they are overused, they turn your writing into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/avoid-sticky-sentences-better-writer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sticky mess<\/a>. Consider the following example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<span style=\"color: #008000;\">Indeed<\/span>, after a three month search, Roger landed a tree-trimming job. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">However<\/span>, he wasn&#8217;t certain that it was the right job for him. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">Moreover<\/span>, he was afraid that he wasn&#8217;t qualified for the work. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">In addition<\/span>, the sophisticated power tools he would have to learn intimidated him. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">Therefore<\/span>, he intended to decline the offer and keep searching for work.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Can you see how the overuse of spicy transition words has made this paragraph more difficult to read than necessary?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a revision that cuts some of the spicy transitions and replaces others with milder versions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;After a three month search, Roger landed a tree-trimming job. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">But<\/span>, he wasn&#8217;t certain that it was the right job for him. He was afraid that he wasn&#8217;t qualified for the work, <span style=\"color: #008000;\">and<\/span> the sophisticated power tools he would have to learn intimidated him. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">So<\/span>, he intended to decline the offer and keep searching for work.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As you can see, I cut a couple of the words (&#8220;indeed,&#8221; &#8220;moreover&#8221;). I also traded the strong, intrusive transition words for milder transitions that don\u2019t interrupt the flow of the paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>Milder transition words tend to be shorter and use more common language than the spicier ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Screen-Shot-2014-02-06-at-9.07.36-AM.png\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1836\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Screen-Shot-2014-02-06-at-9.07.36-AM.png\" alt=\"Good transition words\" width=\"175\" height=\"189\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1836 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20175%20189%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"Good transition words\" width=\"175\" height=\"189\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Screen-Shot-2014-02-06-at-9.07.36-AM.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another thing to note about spicy transitions. Transitions are stronger when they are the first word in the sentence and less powerful when they are a few words in. One great example of this comes with the word &#8220;however.&#8221; Consider the following sentence:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It seems that the aliens have come in peace. <span style=\"color: #008000;\">However<\/span>, life as we know it will be altered forever.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this example, &#8220;however&#8221; has been placed at the beginning of the second sentence, making it a more forceful transition. This is important if you really want to emphasize the transition.<\/p>\n<p>But watch what happens if we move the transition word forward in the sentence.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It seems that the aliens have come in peace. Life as we know it, <span style=\"color: #008000;\">however<\/span>, will be altered forever.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In this example, the emphasis of the transition word &#8220;however&#8221; is lessened.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of intrusive transition words, I want to make one other note. When listing out a sequence using numbers, you should write &#8220;first, second, third, fourth, fifth, etc.&#8221; Don&#8217;t write &#8220;firstly, secondly, thirdly, fourthly, fifthly\u2026etc.&#8221; These words get pretty ridiculous the longer your list.<\/p>\n<p>All that said, sometimes the spicy transition words are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/how-to-become-a-better-writer-smart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">better word choices<\/a>. This can be especially true in academic or scientific writing\u2014although you should still use them intentionally. It all depends on the purpose and audience of your work.<\/p>\n<h2>Good Transition Words: A Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Good transition words help your reader get from point A to point B seamlessly and effortlessly.
