If you are an extremely talented writer, you may be able to intuitively create a compelling essay with all the components needed to be both persuasive and easy to swallow\u2026or follow.<\/p>\n<p>However, if writing doesn\u2019t come easily to you, you can benefit from creating a 5-paragraph essay outline before jumping into your writing assignment. I always make an outline first, no matter what writing project I\u2019m working on.<\/p>\n<p>There are endless, different ways to write a compelling essay. But, if your teacher is demanding that you sum up your argument in five succinct paragraphs, follow this easy tutorial on how to create a 5-paragraph essay outline.<\/p>\n<h2>Structure of the 5-Paragraph Essay Outline<\/h2>\n<p>The 5-paragraph essay is made of\u2026you guessed it\u2026five paragraphs. An outline ensures that you have the necessary components to write an awesome essay.<\/p>\n<p>Without further delay, let\u2019s jump into more detail about each of the outline components.<\/p>\n<h2>Step One: Identify Your Topic<\/h2>\n<p>First we need a topic. Typically, your instructor will give you a subject to write about, or at least parameters for a topic. Always follow your teacher\u2019s specific instructions when embarking on your 5-paragraph essay journey. After all, you don\u2019t want the wrath of your instructor to come down upon you for completely ignoring instructions.<\/p>\n<p>For our sample topic, we\u2019re going to use the following prompt:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>What are the arguments for or against writing a 5-paragraph essay? More power can be added to your position by creating a statement about what <i>should<\/i> or <i>shouldn\u2019t<\/i> be done. This is a great place to include quotes directly from your research sources.<\/p>\n<p>For example, to support argument A (\u201cThe 5-paragraph essay is too basic\u201d), I might offer the following evidence:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Support 1A<\/b>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagonow.com\/white-rhino\/2012\/05\/if-you-teach-or-write-5-paragraph-essays-stop-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago teacher Ray Salazar<\/a> says, \u201cThe five-paragraph essay is rudimentary, unengaging, and useless.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Support 2A:<\/b> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csulb.edu\/~eguzik\/fivepara.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elizabeth Guzik of California State University, Long Beach<\/a> says, \u201cThe five paragraph essay encourages students to engage only on the surface level without attaining the level of cogency demanded by college writing.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Similarly, in regards to argument C (\u201cThe 5-paragraph essay does not allow for analytical thinking, rather, it confines students to following a restrictive formula\u201d), I might support it with this quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Support 1C:<\/b> According to an article in <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/teachers\/teacher_in_a_strange_land\/2012\/10\/should_we_teach_the_five-paragraph_essay.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Education Week<\/i><\/a>, \u201cThere is a consensus among college writing professors that \u2018students are coming [to college] prepared to do five-paragraph themes and arguments but [are] radically unprepared in thinking analytically.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Remember, for the 5-paragraph essay structure, you typically need to come up with three supports for each of your three arguments. In our example, I only show three of the total nine supports needed to round out the argument.<\/p>\n<h2>Step Six: Develop Your Intro Hook<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/intro.png\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/intro.png\" alt=\"thesis intro\" width=\"189\" height=\"164\"><\/noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1516 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20189%20164%22%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"thesis intro\" width=\"189\" height=\"164\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kibin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/intro.png\"><\/a>Once you have your thesis and arguments sorted, you can work on developing your introduction. In a traditional 5-paragraph essay, the first step in writing your conclusion is to restate your thesis using different words.<\/p>\n<p>For example, I might write, \u201cThe 5-paragraph essay is an outdated and useless writing tool that should be phased out of the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To close out the paper, I would open a discussion on the broader significance of this argument.
